Jonah, although a prophet to Israel, is not remembered for his ministry to Israel. Rather, the historical account of the prophet relates to his call to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh and his refusal to go.
Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, was infamous for their cruelty. They prized brutality, and were the historical nemesis of Israel and Judah. Israel's distaste for Nineveh produced a rebellious and reluctant attitude in Jonah toward God's request for prophetic service.
The story of Jonah magnifies the power of God in salvation to change the hearts of pagans even through the reluctant preaching of a prophet. And it also illustrates the patience and forbearance of God with His children.
